Deze fotogravure van de Duitse kunstenaar Sascha Schneider uit het jaar 1904 heeft als titel ‘Hypnose’. Volgens Fenichel zou men de hypnotiserende blik als een penis in erectie en tegelijkertijd als een act van castratie kunnen interpreteren. Aangezien Schneider zijn eigen seksualiteit maar moeilijk kon uitleven – hij werd gechanteerd en achtervolgt vanwege zijn homoseksuele neigingen – lijkt mij deze interpretatie enigszins van toepassing.
