Turbo Lover - Robert Halford and Freud.

Robert John Arthur "Rob" Halford - Judas Priest

"In later life, the fetishist feels that he enjoys yet another advantage from his substitute for a genital. The meanings of the is not know to other people, so the fetish is not withheld from him: it is easilly accesible and he can readily obtain the sexual satisfaction attached to it. What other men have to woo and make exertion for can be had by the fetishist with no trouble at all." - Freud, Fetishism.

In an attempt to find an outlet for the angst caused by his hidden sexuality and to give himself a professional reason to frequent S&M shops, Rob Halford introduced the leather-and-studs biker/S&M looks for the band.   With the acces to these S&M shops, Rob halford was able to exercise (excuse the pun) his sexuality, without being publically adressed. Though through his lyrics (For an example, I'll use the song 'Turbo Lover', off of the 1986 record 'Turbo') , it became evident, that he had the acces, and was enjoying his then secret to the fullest:

We hold each other closer, as we shift to overdrive
And everything goes rushing by, with every nerve alive
We move so fast it seems as tough we've taken to the sky
Love machines in harmony, we hear the engines cry.
We can see the subtle nods to homosexuality in the lyrics, because just who exactly is his Turbo Lover?

Though through it all, I have to disagree with Freud on his opinion 'What other men have to woo and make exertion for can be had by the fetishist with no trouble at all.'
Rob Halford did, in fact, carry a large mental and emotional burden (to which depression and substance abuse followed). It was only until he was older that he openly stated his sexuality and was freed from his demons, way past what Freud suggests. Being received with a warm embrace by the public, he continued to live as an openly gay and support gay rights, as well as being a tough biker.

To end on a quote from Plato's Symposium:
'...these boys {who are attracted to men} are the ones who are outstanding in their childhood and youth, because they're inherently more manly than others.'
